Chief minister J Jayalalithaa is
expected to tour the city as part of the AIADMK party’s election campaign from
April 19 onwards.
She is expected to address meetings
at various places for her party’s candidates.
On April 21, she plans to campaign
for the Chennai South candidate Dr Jeyavardan who resides in R. A. Puram. The
meetings are to be in Perungudi, MGR Nagar and T. Nagar ( bus stand) that day.
But as of now, the schedule does not
include any meetings in the Adyar/ Mylapore neighborhood.
This is for the record. And is a
record.
Chennai South has 42 candidates in
Election 2014. This includes the candidates of all the leading political
parties there are a big group of men and women who are standing as reps of many
other political parties besides independents.Which means that the EVMs deployed
in this constituency will feature a long, long list of names.
The campaign has slowly hotted up in
the constituency as nominations closed on Saturday.
Earlier in the week, MDMK leader
Vaiko turned up in Mylapore to support the BJP campaign here – party candidate
L. Ganesan. The caravan moved through the inner streets of this neighborhood,
for some close campaigning.
On Sunday morning, the AIADMK teams
also did some close campaigning, even distributing pamphlets to church
goes in San Thome.
Later that evening, DMK leader drove
into the city from the south side after a long tour of the districts,
addressing meetings in the Vela-chery-Thoraipakkam, and then in Foreshore
Estate and Kapali Thotam before heading for a public meet in T. Nagar.
CHENNAI: Electioneering in the Chennai South Lok Sabha
constituency went offshore on Thursday with BJP candidate L Ganesan leading a
'NaMo Boat Rally' to seek votes at various coastal fishing hamlets.
At Nainakuppam, a tiny coastal village off the East
Coast Road, a huge banner featuring life size images of BJP prime ministerial
candidate Narendra Modi and Ganesan holding fish, welcomed voters.
Ganesan, who is in his late sixties, posed for
pictures and delivered a speech promising a better deal for fisherfolk if a new
government headed by Modi came to power at the Centre. When he finished his
speech, Ganesan donned a life jacket and cadres lifted him aboard a motor boat.
A few cadres of BJP alliance partners --he DMDK, the
PMK and the MDMK -- cheered as the boat eased forward into the waves propelled
by a motor and was pulled into the sea by receding waves. A few seconds later,
the cadres with their multi-coloured flags were also seaborne on other boats.
However, due to the choppy sea conditions, half a
dozen boats which had ventured into the waters, returned after 15 minutes.
"Modi wave is too much for the rally," quipped a BJP cadre.
Returning ashore, Ganesan delivered another speech,
this time promising to establish a supermarket for fisherwoman in his
constituency.
He reminded fishermen that after the 2004 tsunami,
Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi sent a special train with relief materials
to Chennai.
He said Modi as Prime Minister would initiate several
measures for fisherfolk's welfare, including doubling the compensation for
fishermen killed and injured in mishaps and enhancing the pension for retired
fishermen.
