Campaigning in Chennai South

Has the community in Chennai South got the opportunity to appreciate the issues that the candidates of this constituency vouch for? Going by the ground reality, no.

Until May 6, candidates of the leading political parties had rolled their caravans into colonies, made short speeches and moved on. A few rallies were organized. A few public meetings were held. But little effort was being made by the candidates to communicate to voters what they stood for, the issues they hope to pursue and their goals in public life. Even the serious among independent candidates failed in this regard. While N. S. Venkataraman who is actually the candidate of a little known party shares his vision on his web site and via handbills given away at small meetings, entrepreneur Sarath Babu was not seen in most parts of the constituency though TV channels featured him and his campaign.

Visually impaired were active campaigners
Here is a media note sent by the office of candidate
N S Venkataraman –
We have started the campaign actively from 29th April.
A number of visually impaired persons, orthopaedically disabled persons and persons from lower income group  are actively campaigning for me.
 V. Kalyanam Personal Secretary to Mahatma Gandhi and V. Sundaram IAS (Retd.),  M. Kumar, General Secretary, Desia  Paadhukaappu  Kazhagam  are campaigning along with me, delivering speeches.

The campaign had been divided into 4 types as given below
Campaign 1  :- Pamphlets will be distributed without using mike at the various places :
Campaign 2 :  Speeches will be delivered by G.Sundaram, V.Kalyanam, M.Kumar and N.S.Venkataraman at various spots in different areas
Campaign 3 :  Individual person will distribute the pamphlets at various points.
Campaign 4 : 3 lakhs pamphlets to be distributed for inserting in newspapers
During the campaign , speeches are made , a banner is held high by visually impaired persons and distribution of pamphlets  are made by several poor and orthopaedically disabled persons.

The BJP candidate, L Ganesan launched his campaign on Saturday last in the heart of the city – Alwarpet – with worship at a local temple. In the realingned constituency areas off the busy TTK Road now fall under South Chennai and Ganesan toured these areas.
He was also seen at Nageswara Rao Park in Luz meeting morning walkers. Hundreds of people exercise here in the mornings.

R. S. Bharathi, DMK candidate for South Chennai Lok Sabha constituency was introduced to K K Nagar residents and local association representatives on last weekend (April 18) when he toured this area  to campaign.
The meet was hosted by the K. K. Nagar Federation led by president Vairasekar.
The meet was held at K K Nagar’s Ist Sector playground .
Nagging civic issues of the area like, the ‘failed’ CCRCP project that is polluting the ground water and of the Adyar River carrying effluents which cause health hazards were raised by participants.
Bharathi said the cleaning of city’s waterways will be taken up shortly with help from Swami Sai Baba. Sai Baba has been already approached for support, he said.
Some of Bharathi’s supporters screamed ’success is yours! at the meet.
Bharathi however said, “Success has always been elusive to me on my maiden attempt but I have gone on to win in the local elections in the subsequent attempts with thumping majority.”
Later that day, a small crowd of about 30 people, heard BJP candidate, L Ganesan respond to queries raised by people at a meeting held at a kalyana mandapam in West Mambalam.
Ganesan said that he wanted to be very alive to the civic issues bothering the area, and offered to keep in close touch with residents associations.

DMK and ADMK in KK Nagar
"Everyone knows that DMK had made a request for the release of the seven accused. I had asked if it was right on part of Chief Justice P Sathasivam to comment about it since Judges should not politicise such issues. Not for politicising it," he told reporters here. He was responding to a query on the appeal made by Arputhammal, mother of A G Perarivalan, one of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi case, to political leaders not to politicise the issue relating to the verdict on their release. Karunanidhi on Saturday said Chief Justice Sathasaivam's indication that the verdict on a petition relating the release of all seven life convicts would be given in a week has led to fears of a "political fallout" in Tamil Nadu ahead of April 24 Lok Sabha poll. On Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa seeking his response to charges of alleged irregularities made by expelled party leader M K Alagiri against DMK MP T R Baalu in Sethusamudram and the golden quadrilateral projects, Karunanidhi said, "Who accused whom is not important. Let them clearly explain what was the mistake made by Baalu." At an election rally on Sunday, Jayalalithaa had said, "M K Alagiri has spoken that he was aware of the money siphoned off by Baalu in the golden quadrilateral project besides the wrongs committed in the Sethu project. Karunanidhi should respond to this."

BJP
BJP which has a strong alliance of six parties witnessed many personalities campaigning for the party candidate in this constituency including the prime ministerial candidate of the party shri Narendra Modi who campaigned for south Chennai constituency at A.M Jain college Chennai and we could also witness others like DMDK leader vijayakanth who were campaigning for the party candidate.social media, sms and tv advertisements also played a very big role

Final Campaign
Decorated vans playing popular songs. Autos displaying posters. Bikers carrying party flags. Campaigners dressed in their party colors. It seemed as if the campaign for the Lok Sabha elections in Chennai South constituency came to life the last weekend. All was quiet and low profile so long. Perhaps the weekend had been reserved for the fireworks. And yet, the candidates did not seem to have made an effort to reach out to the electorate. There had been some street side meetings and caravans had rolled. But many do not know the names of candidates of leading parties. In most cases, people are not aware of the issues that the candidates are standing for. Party volunteers are seen targeting the slum colonies and areas where the economically poor reside.
